Smoking Oat Straw: The Mild Base Herb
Share
Oat straw is exactly what it sounds like, and it's one of the mildest things you can put in a rolling paper.
What it is
Oat straw comes from the green stalks of Avena sativa, cut before the grain matures. Same plant as the oats in your kitchen, harvested at a different moment for a different purpose. It has a long history in European herbal tradition and is widely drunk as a tea.
Taste and smoke
Mildly sweet and earthy, and the comparison most people reach for is a hayfield. The flavor is soft and the smoke is smooth. Oat straw is pleasant enough on its own, but its real use is as a base, giving a blend body and volume without contributing much flavor of its own.
What to pair it with
It goes with nearly everything, which is the point of a base herb. Mullein alongside it for even more loft, or skullcap for a bit more earthiness.
In our blends
Oat straw is in Solar, with calendula, coltsfoot, gotu kola, lemon balm, mullein and tulsi. It's a lot of why Solar smokes as softly as it does despite the tulsi. Also as a loose blend.
Tea Tokes blends are tobacco-free and nicotine-free. 21+.

Oatstraw is excellent, almost buttery as well on its own. Great for loosening mucus if you are or were a tobacco smoker.
