Unveiling Chrysanthemum: A Revered Eastern Blossom's Journey into Herbal Smoking

Chrysanthemum has decorated Chinese gardens and teacups for centuries, and it has its own festivals. Few smoking herbs arrive with that much cultural weight attached.

What it is

Chrysanthemum morifolium carries deep symbolic significance in East Asian culture. In China it's associated with autumn, longevity and harmony, and it's one of the Four Gentlemen of classical Chinese painting. Chrysanthemum festivals, Ju Hua, are held across the country and celebrate the flower in its own right.

It is also one of the most widely drunk flower teas in the world.

Taste and smoke

Thoroughly floral. The aroma is delicate, closer to a late-autumn garden than to anything sweet, and the taste is mildly sweet and clean. In a blend it lifts the other herbs without taking over, which makes it a useful supporting flower rather than a lead.

What to pair it with

Mullein and marshmallow both work well underneath it, giving the blend body while letting the floral character through.
