Smoking Red Clover Blossom and Leaf

Red clover is the one you already know by sight even if you've never thought about it. Pink-purple globes on every roadside, meadow and neglected lawn in the northern hemisphere.

What it is

Trifolium pratense is a legume, with the characteristic three-part leaf that gives the genus its name. It has been part of European and Chinese herbal tradition for a very long time, and it is farmed as a cover crop because it fixes nitrogen back into soil.

Taste and smoke

Mild and earthy, with a sweet floral note from the blossoms. Both the blossom and the leaf are used, and they smoke a little differently. The blossom carries more of the sweetness; the leaf is greener and plainer.

It's a gentle herb. In a blend it fills out the middle rather than leading.
