Mullein: The Base of Almost Every Blend

If you have smoked anything we make, you have smoked mullein. It is in all six blends, and it is in most other people's blends too.

What it is

Verbascum thapsus is a tall biennial with soft, velvety leaves and a flower spike that can reach six feet. It grows on roadsides and waste ground across North America and Europe, and it has been used as a smoking herb in a number of cultures, including by Native American peoples and across ancient Europe.

Taste

Mild and subtly earthy. Mullein is not a flavor herb, which is precisely why it works as a base. It gives other herbs room to be the interesting one.

The thing that matters if you blend your own

Embrace the fluffiness. Dried, cut and sifted, mullein takes on a light, airy texture, and that is the whole reason blenders use it. It bulks a blend out so you get a fuller roll from less material, and the loft keeps airflow open so the draw stays easy and the burn stays even. A blend of dense herbs alone rolls tight and smokes hot. Mullein fixes that.

Ratios are worth experimenting with. Too little and the roll is cramped, too much and the blend tastes of nothing.
